life matters

a life in music

Born in South Africa; with music on the streets everywhere.

I was a choir boy till  age 13 ,my first  and only structured music lessons.

In 1971 my family migrated to Perth, Western Australia.

As an art student I started to play music with guitar and singing with my brother. My first 'act' Menu - a  trio performing covers.  By adding a drummer and guitarist this became a reggae/afro tinged pop rock Tiger Mountain Band. performing covers & the beginnings of original material.

From 1978 started to focus on performing original compositions. I wrote & sang in various original reggae/afro/funk bands from 4 piece Ridim Factor to 14 piece Radics, incorporating a string quartet.

I formed the first live reggae act in Perth Mario Bwana, followed by Just call me Bwana and Spliff. More bands followed…The Answer, A2Z, Mr Cairo, Ridim Factor, BruceGilbert & the Refugees, Meltdown, Radics, BigWorld and Bruce Gilbert & Curfew.

In 1987 after my first solo album Lovers & Rockers was released I was invited to form a band in Adelaide;. I decided to live in Adelaide & we continued to form this 10 piece reggae-fusion act. At first Radics started as a 6 piece releasing a 6 track recording Yellow tape & finally a 10 piece act touring the major cities.

In 1989  we toured with UB40. We released the album United We Stand in the same year.

Over a 30 year span; playing original music is more important to my creative sensibilities.

After performing for years, I decided to concentrate on my art, painted every day for 4 years & still continue my art today.

In 2001, I started my liaison with a producer, guitarist, composer Diego Bosco. We recorded loads of music with spoken word style songs & Dante’s classic Purgatory;  my poetry, jams, inspirational speeches (Mandela Dub) & performances at Perth International Arts Festival & Kidogo Arts in Fremantle presenting a 6 piece band.
